DIY Tutorial: Easy, Sweet Fabric-Covered Boxes

When I was sprucing up my craft room/closet, I created a little DIY project along the way.  This is what happens: I have my to-do list and without fail, I will add a few things to it as I complete each project.  I guess it would be a sad, sad day when the house, and my to-do list, is totally "done" though.   In this case, I decided to use a yard of green and white toile fabric to pretty-up some big shoeboxes to hold ribbon and tissue paper.  Here is the finished product nestled snugly in the shelves in the craft room:

The process was simple and took maybe 20 minutes from start to finish.  I had all of the supplies on hand, so it cost me nothing, and you know how much I love that!  Here's what you'll need:

* fabric (I used about a yard for two large boxes and I had some left over)

* glue gun & scissors

* shoe boxes

It is really as simple as wrapping a present.  First, cut the fabric to size.  I placed the lid on the fabric and gave about an inch+ around each side so that I could wrap it around the edges and glue it to the inside.

Once I cut the fabric, I ran a thick bead of hot glue along the side and pressed the fabric into place.  I repeated with the other side, pulling the fabric taut so that it was nice and tight against the box.

Then I worked on the other side.  I had to cut a little and glue a little, and I won't lie: the inside of the boxes isn't neat as a pin, but I was able to tack down all of the edges just fine.

Once all the edges were glued around the box, I let the glue totally dry and then put the lids on the bottoms.  That's it!  I'm so happy that I have a cute place to store my crafty supplies. Here's another shot of the finished product.

So what do you think? Are you inspired to whip out your glue gun and do something with fabric? Please share!

See you swoon,

  3. I have done this for gifts as well. It's like getting a present inside a present. To make it neater, I put fabric in the boxes all the way down to the bottom. I cut a piece of cardboard slightly smaller than the bottom of the box, and the inside of the lid, and cover them with fabric as well. Place the covered cardboard inside the bottom and glue it down with just a few dabs of hot glue, and do the same for the lid, and voila! It looks like it was factory made. For gifts, just tie a fabric ribbon around it and your done. Great for hostess gifts, showers, etc. and you can use different fabric to suit any occasion to cover a dollar store box! I did a baby shower gift, I covered a box in baby theme fabric and I filled it with little necessities, baby powder, lotion, wipes, swabs etc. all in perfect diaper bag/travel sizes. It was about all I could afford at the time, but it went over like a million bucks! That baby is 17 now and his mom still uses the box to hold all his baby keepsakes, even his hospital bracelet :)
