What I Wore {part iv}

Good morning!  Here's more of what I wore.  I love sharing these with you and am excited to see when people comment!

* Floral Blouse & Chevron Skirt*

This was a bit of a risk and I'm still not sure that it worked.  I found this floral blouse at Target and fell in love.  I've seen it all over the blogs, too.  I really wanted a black and white striped skirt to pair it with - I wanted the stripes to be wide and horizontal.  I couldn't really find one, but I did find this chevron skirt at Old Navy and it was on sale for $12!  It was "dark night" which is actually a deep navy, not a true black.  I wore it with my brown riding boots.

* Grey Sweater Dress with Brown Accessories*

I wore this sweater dress (which I bought on sale at Old Navy this Winter) already with black boots and a funky necklace.  I knew I wanted to try it with brown, so on a cold March day, I did just that.  I wore my tall riding boots and a wide brown belt.  I liked the way this turned out.

* Ombre Cardigan, Magenta Top & Belt, Black Pencil Skirt *

If you haven't been able to tell, I am in love with belts.  I wear them all the time: wide ones, skinny ones, fabric ones, sashes ... I love them all.  I dug out my black pencil skirt (very old - I think it's from the now defunct Petite Sophisticate), my magenta cotton top from Banana from last year, and an ombre cardian from j.crew from 2010.  I wore my black boots and a magenta belt that I got on crazy sale at Ann Taylor after Christmas.  I think the belt was $5.  I rolled my shirt sleeves over the sleeves of the cardigan for a pop of more color. This outfit made me feel good.

That's three!  Three vonderful outfits! ah ah ah.  Happy day today ... what better way to start than with a quote from the Count?

See you swoon,

What I Wore {part iii}

Tuesday is here.  Tuesday, for me, is the worst day of the week.  Monday feels like I still have my big toe dipped in the weekend, and I can sort of map out my to do list for the week.  Wednesday is Hump Day.  Thursday is omg-one-more-day-til-Friday.  Friday is Friday!  But Tuesday is far from the last weekend, far from the next weekend and well-entrenched in the work week.  Blerg.

How about some fun fashion today?  Yes?  Yes.  Here is a round-up of some recent outfits I wore.

* Brown Cardi-Jacket & Cream Pants *

I have had this brown funky sweater/cardigan/jacket thing for close to ten years now.  I bought it at Anthropologie and it has served me well!  I wore it with a pale pink long sleeve tee (from the j.crew factory), cream pants, nude heels and a brown leather belt.  The fringe along the sweater and sleeves reminds me of a Fry Guy at McDonalds.

* Polka Dot Blouse & Color block Skirt *

This is one of my new favorite outfits.  I found the polka dot blouse at Forever 21 for about $20.  It's sweet and chic at the same time.  I wore it with a color block skirt that I got at TJ Maxx over the summer for about $9.  I wore a thick black belt and nude patent heels.

* Black Button-down, Tan Pencil Skirt & Red Pumps *

I can't remember when I bought this black button-down shirt from Banana Republic.  It has to be 5 years now.  I love it because of the crisp collar and the 3/4 sleeves, but the length is a bit wonky: it's way too short to tuck in, but it is kind of shapeless if left out.  I had the idea to wear it with my skinny red belt and added my red pumps to go with it.  I love how it turned out. It was a super fun outfit.  These pumps are from the Ann Taylor outlet and were on sale for $15.  My nude pumps in the above pictures are from the Ann Taylor outlet too and were the same price.  I wish I had bought every pair in every color in my size. They are amazing.  AT sells them at the stores, but they're over $100.  Worth every penny, in my opinion, because they are great looking and truly comfortable.  But I'm kicking myself for passing up such a steal!

Have a terrific day.

See you swoon,

What I Wore {part ii}

Happy Hump Day!  How's everyone adjusting to daylight savings? It always takes me a week or so to feel normal after we mess with the clocks.

Recently, I shared a post about some of the outfits I put together.  Here's a round-up of some more.

* Lace Top & Mint Jeans *

I wore this out with a friend:  mint jeans, lace top and my favorite taupe patent heels (from the Ann Taylor outlet).  I thought it was a fun, springy outfit.  Mint (and really all pastel) colored jeans are all the rage right now, and I was so excited to try these skinnies from Gap.  Gap jeans happen to fit me great, so I went for it.  These are true to size and pretty short - I'm 5'1" and I ordered the regular size (not petite) ... as you can see below, they hit right at my ankle.  They would be much shorter on a taller woman.  I got them on mad sale for 40% off of their sale price - total price was $30.  I found the lace top at H&M for $30.  I've been coveting lace tops this season, but finding one that wasn't too sexy, too cheap looking, too fancy or too sheer was tricky.  I was thrilled to find this one.  I just wear a cream cami underneath.

Gap Always Skinny mint skimmers
H&M Lace top
 * Lace Top & Tan Trousers  *

I decided to Tim Gunn my lace top (i.e., "make it work") and wear it to the office.  It was a little tricky, but I think I pulled it off.  I wore my top with my tan trousers and taupe patent heels (both from the Ann Taylor outlet) and a fun long necklace from Banana Republic from a few years ago.  I thought pulling my hair back in a bun made this a bit more office-appropriate as well.

* Blue Gingham Shirt & Bootcut Jeans *

On a somewhat warm casual Friday at work, I decided to wear my blue gingham shirt that I bought at the j.crew outlet in January.  I've already worn this once before, but I wore it dressed up with grey pants and turquoise statement necklace.  I thought I'd try it with my yellow beads, a yellow belt, my favorite boot cut jeans and my cowboy boots.  I have yellow flats too, and I gave them a whirl, but it looked way too matchy-matchy for my taste.  So boots it was.  As I look at this picture, I'm not crazy about the yellow belt.  Ah ... outfit hindsight.

* White Fitted Blouse & Coral Pencil Skirt *

I wanted to wear the lovely coral pencil skirt that I bought at the j.crew outlet in January.   I've worn it before and posted about it.  I wore it with a pink cardigan and pearls for a decidedly lady-like look.  I wanted to switch things up and look a little sexier this time.  I paired the same coral pencil skirt (from the j.crew outlet) with my favorite fitted white blouse (scored on clearance from Banana Republic over three years ago) with my nude patent heels.  I had this bold "gold" statement necklace from Forever 21 (also scored on clearance for maybe $4) and gold hoops.  I really liked the way this outfit came together and the way I felt in it.  I felt like I looked good.  Isn't that the goal of fashion?

I hope you're enjoying these glimpses into my daily wardrobe.  I love sharing :)

See you swoon,

What I Wore {part i}

Hi all!

I have been having so much fun with clothes and fashion lately and thought I might share with you.  So from time to time, I will post a round-up here on Swoon of some of my recent outfits.  I will note that I am working on taking better pictures of myself, which is really difficult.  I think I need a new camera.  Or a cameraman.  Ha.   In all seriousness, I think I need a new camera soon.  And I will take pictures with the timer function.  In the meantime, these will have to do.

Anyway, here are a few looks I recently put together.  I'll put the sources under each photo.

* Casual Friday - Cream Jacket and Skinny Jeans *

My office is business casual during the week, but on Fridays we can wear jeans.  I almost always do.  This particular Friday I wore my skinny jeans, cream shell with ruffle neckline and cream structured jacket that I scored on major sale recently at Banana Republic - I don't see it on the website at all.  I found it in the store and it was on clearance and then an additional 25% off.  It ended up costing $42.  I paired this with my flat brown riding boots and then layered a bunch of pearl necklaces together for a sort of uptown look. [and ugh! phone pictures.  always a great idea in theory and yet they never ever turn out nice.  no more. sorry]

* Grey Sweater Dress *

I really wanted a sweater dress this year, but I knew fit was key because they can be unforgiving and also look a little bulky.  I found this dress at Old Navy.  It got great reviews, so I figured I'd try it.  When I shop online I always read the reviews of items if they are there - you can learn about fit, material, size, etc.  I've passed up many a "great deal" because something had horrible reviews.  And I've picked up great tips, like ordering a size up or down, based on reviews.  Just a tip from me to you!  I ended up getting it for about $15 because it was on sale and then there was a promotion where you could take an additional 30% off.  I wore this with black hose and black boots and paired it with a cool multi-strand necklace from Anthropologie that Jamie got me years ago for my birthday.  I think this dress can go funky too ... if we have a cold day in late March, I want to wear a brown belt and brown riding boots with it.

dress: old navy

* Black Turtleneck and White Skirt *

I found my inspiration for this outfit in the New York Times Sunday Style Magazine - in an Estee Lauder ad of all places. You never know where you'll find inspiration! See ...  here it is:

I had just bought a black turtleneck on crazy clearance at Eddie Bauer for $7.  I didn't have a black turtle and I think they're a great staple. I'm so glad I snatched it up.  I've had this skirt for ages - probably close to 8 years.  I paired it with black patterned tights (you unfortunately cannot see the pattern in the pictures) and black heels, threw my hair in a bun, wore big earrings and ... here I am.

There you go!  Have you put any fun outfits together lately? Or have you been shopping and are dying to share what you found?  Let's talk fashion today. And cameras.  Any recs for a great little point and shoot that takes divine pictures?  I am all ears.

See you swoon,

Nantucket Red: Winter Edition

Morning all!  Remember my Nantucket Red skirt that I bought over the Summer?  The one I pined for and the ultimately bit the bullet and ordered? Well it is back.

When I bought it, I assumed I would only wear it in the Summer, because it is a decidedly Summer skirt - the color, the length, the look ... it's all very Summery.  In the Summer, I paired it with wedge sandals, a chambray top and a belt:

But as the seasons changed, I thought I might try to wear it in cooler weather too.  So when Fall rolled around, I tried something new: I wore my tall flat riding boots, a tan ruffly cardigan and a light weight oatmeal colored cowl-neck shell underneath:

Now that it's Winter, I knew I could keep going.  I have been lusting after Irish sweaters this season, but the wool versions are always too bulky on me.  LL Bean happened to have a great sale on a cotton cable sweater that had the same look as a traditional wool Irish sweater. I snatched it up.  I wore the new sweater with my skirt, along with my tall brown riding boots and brown tights.  I grabbed a yellow and tan polka dotted scarf from my closet and some gold hoop earrings and ... voila!

I love the outfit and love love love that I can wear my skirt even though Summer is half a year away.  I'm going to round out the year by figuring out a Spring look too!  I've already got ideas swirling -- maybe pink, maybe turquoise, oooh the possibilities.

See you swoon,

Water water everywhere and not a drop to drink.

I am talking about clothes, and specifically that all-too-common feeling of staring at your entire closet and feeling like you have absolutely nothing to wear.  I have been there.   As a working mama, I am happy to share how I broke out of that rut and have learned to love my wardrobe.  What works for me might not work for you.

I hate to say it, but it is the truth: looking good takes effort.  I am sure there are women out there who can waltz into their closets, deftly rifle through their wardrobe and create a gorgeous, perfectly styled outfit in mere moments.  I am not one of those women.  Which is why for years my work "uniform" was a variation of a pair of trousers and a plain top or sweater.  Like this (blurry iPhone picture):

While there's nothing at all wrong with that outfit, day after day after day it becomes flat and boring.  I used the excuse that I did not have time in the morning to pick out something cute and creative to wear: I had two kids to get dressed and fed and out the door. I had lunches to pack.  I could barely get myself out the door on time.  Excuses excuses excuses.  Here are my musings on how to break out of the rut:

1.  Plan ahead.

This is totally OCD and Type A, but I plan out my outfits for the week on Sunday.  Not only does this make each morning run much smoother, but it ensures that I am really taking full advantage of my wardrobe because I can spend more than a moment to figure out what I am putting together.  It does not take that long: maybe 15 minutes (sometimes less, sometimes more).  But it's kind of fun.  I write my outfits on a post-it and stick it in my closet (the post-it, by the way, is going by the wayside.  I have a great idea for a much better solution.  stay tuned)

2.  "What Not To Wear" your closet with a friend.

You know the show "What Not To Wear" on TLC - one of my favorite parts of the show is when Stacey and Clinton go through the person's closet and tell them what works, and what does not work, in her wardrobe.  If you have a friend whose style you admire, I whole-heartedly recommend asking her to come on over and go through your closet.  I did this a few years ago with my friend Julia.  She was kind enough to come down for the day and we went through my closet.  She was able to see my clothes with totally fresh eyes and helped me put together outfits that I otherwise would never have thought to do.  Aside from nearly tripling my wardrobe with options, it was a lot of fun.

3.  Check out catalogues and blogs.

Pay attention to the catalogues you receive! There are great styling tips in there.  Of course, you can also buy fashion magazines, but lately, I have found catalogues, blogs, stores' websites and even stores' windows much more helpful when putting an outfit together.  Look at these adorable pages torn from j.crew ... tons of ideas.  And while some may be a bit over-styled, you can easily take elements from the photos and make them work for you.  Try new things - things that you otherwise might never try.  Fashion is fun.  Have fun.

4.  Get out and go shopping.

I get my best deals and find the best pieces when I go to stores vs. shop online.  Don't get me wrong: I love shopping online and I have found great deals and clothes that way.  But when you get out, you can see how the stores style clothes.  You can try them on.  You can try many sizes and colors.  It's a time investment, for sure.  There's nothing quite as easy as shopping on your laptop in your pjs.  I think, though, that actually going to the stores is a worthwhile activity.  I shop alone, but I also love to shop with a girlfriend.  It's fun and it's also a great way to get an opinion on an outfit.  There is no way I would have walked out of the Eddie Bauer outlet with that steal of a deal tweed jacket if Jamie were not with me: she made me go in the store in the first place and she made me buy it when I was on the fence. Good friend with honest opinions are a shopper's best friend. :)

5.  Find a tailor.

Unless you are super lucky, clothes will probably not fit you exactly perfectly from the start.  I am 5'1", so I have a challenge finding clothes that fit me well.  If the fit of a piece is otherwise fantastic and you love it, take it to a tailor to make it perfect.  I have had tailors bring up the hems of pants, skirts and dresses, fix necklines of dresses, take in shirts and dresses, and otherwise work their magic on clothes that look ok but needed a little tweaking.

6.  Find your wardrobe essentials.

Wardrobe "top ten" essentials are all over the internet.  I think they're helpful but certainly not a set-in-stone edict.  Your top ten will be different from my top ten based on what you do, your work environment, your style, etc.  For me, the Top Ten Essentials of Tim Gunn of Project Runway fame are spot on perfect.  His top-ten, and my comments, are:

  1. basic black dress:  the beauty of a black dress is it can be dressed up or down in a flash.  There have been so many times at work that I was invited to a dinner or event where I was not sure of what others would be wearing.  So I'd wear a black dress and bring a change of accessories: one simple and one fancy.  Black is ultimate chic.
  2. trench coat:  These are everywhere right now!  I have seen some adorable ones at the Banana Republic outlet, Old Navy, Target and Boden (which is where I bought mine).  My trench is emerald green and I adore it.  Of the top 10 essentials, this one is probably the most optional, in my opinion.
  3. classic dress pants:  yes.  well-fitting pants are essential, absolutely essential.  I think with pants, you should find a store that cuts its pants to fit you well and stick to that store.  For me, it's Ann Taylor and Loft: their pants just fit like a dream from the start.  I pay up for pants: a perfectly fitting pant is worth it.  Neutrals are key for building your wardrobe:  black, dark and light grey, tan, brown.
  4. classic white shirt: As with pants, fit is key here.  I think options are good, and if button-downs work for you (I know they do not work for larger busted women), buy a handful of colors that work well on you.  I have found Banana Republic and New York & Co. have the best fitting shirts for me.
  5. skirt:  Figure out which style looks best on you and invest in it.  For me, it's a pencil skirt.  I have pencils in a bunch of colors and I also have a bunch of other "fun" skirts.  But my wardrobe builders are black and tan pencil skirts, both of which I had to have tailored because they were too long.
  6. blazer:  I do not have many blazers in my wardrobe and I want this to change.  Fit is crucial, so trying on is crucial.  You can pair blazers with pants and skirt, dresses, even jeans.  I think a structured cardigan is a great substitute for a blazer, too, if you are not really a blazer person.
  7. day dress:  Talk about easy.  My wardrobe is stocked with a ton of day dresses - they are a super easy way to look pulled together without having to put in much thought.  I have found great dresses at Target, Loft and New York & Co.
  8. cashmere sweater:  I'm not sure that the sweater has to be cashmere ... but a well-fitting sweater is definitely something you need.  I think a mix of sweater styles is a smart thing to have in a wardrobe: sweaters you wear alone that are fitted; sweaters that you layer with tops or blouses underneath; sweaters that you wear with dresses.  Cashmere feels wonderful, but hey, it's expensive.  Frankly, I would rather have three wool/silk options than one cashmere if given the choice.
  9. jeans:  I think every woman needs three pairs of jeans: (1) a boot cut; (2) a skinny; (3) a wide-legged.  Darker wash is always best and flattering.  Pay attention to the rise, the waist line and the butt ... some jeans have huge pockets on the rear end - not flattering.  Not at all!  Express has really great denim.
  10. comfortable alternative to sweatsuit:  or: something cute to wear on weekends.  I have a  couple of weekend uniforms - things I wear for running around doing errands or attending kids' soccer or gymnastics events that still look pulled together but are practical and, most of all, comfortable.  I wear jeans with a plain sweater and scarf or leggings and a long sweater.  You should have a pair of jeans that is as comfortable as sweats.  They do exist!

7.  Consider a card with benefits.
I am not encouraging debt at all, but there are certain store credit cards that have a ton of benefits.  I use, and love, my Banana Republic Luxe card.  I pay it off every month - that's my rule.  But the benefits are terrific:  I get free shipping, free tailoring for full-priced pants, and for every dollar I spend, I accumulate points toward reward certificates.  Love love love it.

8.  Have a "go to" emergency outfit.

There are days when I'm not feeling the outfit I picked out, or I get it on and realize it needs ironing or has a tear.  It is these days when I grab my emergency outfit, which is either (1) dress or (2) all black ensemble with a colorful scarf.

via

9.  Don't sweat the number.

OK.  I confess: recently I was at the mall and went into the Limited.  They had a killer sale on pants.  I tried them on and the size I normally wear was too snug. But the next size up fit like a dream.  I got upset (!) and put those pants back and stormed out of the store.  The more I thought about it, the more I realized how stupid I was being.  So I went back and bought them and am super glad I did.  I think a lot of women struggle with this, especially if you have lost weight and never wanted to be "that" size again.  But it's just a number and if the pants fit, wear them.

10.  Get some trends.

Finally, while essentials are great, you need some "pop" to your wardrobe or you will be bored.  Stores such as Forever 21, H&M, and New York & Co. are great for trendy but affordable pieces.  Bring in some prints: polka dots, florals, stripes, whatever.  Every wardrobe needs some fun.  And with prices around $11, $17, $21 ... you can afford to do it.

See you swoon,

Falling for Fall Wedding Fashion

Good morning!  I'm very excited about heading to the wedding of one of my best friends this Fall.  So excited, in fact, that I am already daydreaming (ok ok planning) about what to wear to it.  It is going to be a super fun wedding - my friend and her fiance are hilarious, their families are too, and best of all, the two of them are obviously best friends and in love.  The best kind of wedding by far.  Oh ... did I mention there will be karaoke?  Swoon.

So I've been contemplating my own attire.  I know the bridesmaids are wearing black, so I immediately ruled that out.  I think I want to go in soft shades of blush and gold: sort of a softer take on late Summer/early Fall colors.   Here's the plan:

I cannot believe I found the exact dress that was in my mind's eye.  I was talking about what I wanted with a bunch of girlfriends and described this dress to a tee!  I had no idea it actually existed.  I'm tempted to buy it now so that it is mine.  It is the j.crew Arabelle dress in misty rose.  I wanted something soft and feminine.  This is *exactly* what I want.  I'm in love with the soft pleats and that sweetheart neckline.

photo courtesy of j.crew
Next up, shoes.  Oooh.  Anyone who knows me knows that I have a predilection for fancy footwear.  I have always wanted a pair of gorgeous gold sandals and darn you, Jimmy Choo ... darn you for making exactly what I wanted.  Unlike the j.crew dress, I don't think I'll be running out to buy these right this moment, but I very well might save my pennies (ha ha lots and lots of pennies) and get them when I can buy in cash.  Aren't these amazing?  They are the Jimmy Choo Mocha Glitter Sandal.  And they are gorgeous.

I'm going to need a bag.  I want a simple champagne satin clutch and lo and behold, lookie here: the Jessica McClintock East/West Satin Frame clutch.  $20!  I actually just ordered this because, again, it is practically perfect in every way.

Now for how to do my hair and makeup.  I think this super feminine, super sweet ensemble needs a bit of an edge to counterbalance all of that softness.  So I'd like to do a messy bun/updo for my hair and a smokey eye with nude glossy lip for makeup.  Honestly, I think Malin Ackerman's look in the rehearsal dinner scene of the movie 27 Dresses is precisely what I'm going for.

But maybe with a bit of a darker eye.  Like so:

Excitement! I'll be sure to let you know how this all turns out.  I'm already warming up my pipes for karaoke and my stems for a long night of dancing.   If I dance all night, I can have two pieces of wedding cake, yes (it's going to happen regardless)?

See you swoon,
