Home: DIY Christmas Tree Skirt

Add this to the category of "things I DIYed but could have paid less if I bought off the shelf." Also add this to the category of "things I meant to post about before Christmas but didn't and yes today is December 30, so I am getting this one in right under the wire."

Back at the beginning of the holiday season, I made a Christmas tree skirt.  And by "make" I mean simply cut some felt and trim, and glue the trim onto the skirt.  Super easy, but not super affordable. But I love it, and it's totally my style, and I made it with my little girl, so I guess that is priceless.  At least that is what I am telling myself.  Here's the skirt!

I saw this gorgeous tree skirt on Design*Sponge last year, and it seemed easy enough.  My old tree skirt was very simple red scalloped felt -- something I grabbed at Target just because I needed something to cover the bottom of the tree (my mom had made one for me before but I think it got destroyed or lost in a move or it's possible it's still being used by my ex).  So when I saw this gorgeous, textured number from Design Sponge that was a DIY, I thought it was perfect.

I printed out the Design*Sponge tutorial, which was my shopping list and got my supplies at JoAnn's.  I bought a big piece of ivory felt that was in their scrap bin (they had several of these) and then spent some time with the trim picking out exactly what I wanted.  Ummmm, it was super expensive.  I almost died when the cashier told me the total (which was close to $100 ...) but decided I was committed to this project and would see it through.  This was last year.

On the morning that we put up our tree (which was the weekend after Thanksgiving), my little girl and I made the skirt by following the directions on the tutorial.  It was very easy.  The hardest part was choosing which trim to put where on the skirt.  First, we cut a hole in the center.  Easy enough.

Then, we glued the tassel/brush trim around the edges and in the middle.  In order to make the skirt look nice and neat and not like a roving band of preschoolers did it, I used a ruler to make sure that the trim was at least somewhat uniformly placed around the skirt.

There was no science to it. We chose which trim we liked and where it should go.  I regret not buying more of the thick sequined trim.  We ran out of that and could only do one strip of it.  Sad face.

The skirt is a little small, but my tree is also a little small, so the scale works.  If I do this again (and that's a big "if" given the cost of the supplies), I would make sure to get a very large scrap of fabric for the skirt.  Here it is complete and under the tree!

Whew! Just under the wire with the Christmas craft.  I hope you had terrific holidays. The new year is upon us.  Time for fresh starts, resolutions and renewed hope that this year will be the best one yet.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours!

via
I haven't been blogging much lately because I've been really busy working, merry making and soaking up the joy of the season with my children.  I'll be back in 2015 with a recap of my races/running/training in 2014, a recap of what I accomplished among my 2014 home resolutions, my 2015 home resolutions and much, much more.  One super exciting thing is I'm planning a major redesign of the blog!

I could not let 2014 pass without a huge thank you to all of you for taking the time out of your day to read my little blog.

Wishing you joy and happiness and laughter in the new year.  And kittens.  I wish the softest kittens for all.

See you swoon,

Autumn Porch

Hello! Autumn is in full swing around these parts, and I'm loving it, even though it took me awhile to let Summer go.

One challenge in living in a townhome, versus a single family home, is the lack of outdoor space to decorate for the seasons.  I've kept things very sparse since I lived here, and only added a wreath at Christmas time.  No more!  I decided to spruce things up this Fall and bring in some pretty Autumn accents.  Here's my front porch after I bought some fun Fall decor:

As you can see, there isn't much space to work with.  I decided to use the far end of my steps.  And rather than go with a lot of orange or red, I brought in a lot of white with pops of orange instead.

The black urns and pots are from Home Depot.  They look so nice, but they're very inexpensive.  I bought a white mum, white pumpkin and orange pumpkin from Home Depot too.  The pretty little berries under the white pumpkin are fake and are from Joann's.

The wreath is also from Joann's.  I made it myself.  I wanted something simple but Fall-like and all of Joann's pre-made wreaths were extremely expensive.  I grabbed a grapevine wreath and some Fall garlands (everything was on sale for 50% off - yay) and just used my glue gun to make it work.  Not bad!

Now here's hoping I can keep these pretty white mums alive!  What about you? Do you decorate for Fall?    And is it just a matter of watering the mums every day or so to make sure they don't die?

See you swoon,

DIY Glittery Christmas Tree Star Tree-Topper

Happy Happy Holidays!  I have an easy craft today - a DIY glittery star Christmas tree topper.   Here is the finished product right up front:

It had far more humble beginnings:

I bought this paper star at Target's after Christmas clearance last year.  I figured I would do *something* with it, but at the time, I had no idea what.  I just liked the style and the shape and the price, which was $2.50 on clearance (originally $10 and I snagged it when everything was 75% off).

I thought the easiest thing to do was to paint right over paper and then use some glitter on top.  And hey, if the experiment went awry, I was out only $2.50.  So I bought the supplies at Michael's and went with a champagne craft paint and white fine glitter, plus glitter glue, all Martha Stewart.

It was very easy.  First, I used the craft paint to cover the star.  It took approximately one hundred thousand coats.  But it was very fast going and easy because I could use the little base to hold it while I put the coats of paint on.   My helper in all things art and crafty, Little, took this action shot.  It's a little blurry, but forgive her, as she is five.

The metallic champagne paint covered the purple and green and everything else.

Then I added the glitter with the glitter adhesive.  Little helped with this step.  We just painted the adhesive on the star and literally dumped the glitter on top.  We used the box that the start came in (seen above) and then transferred the excess glitter back to the jar (Little is in love with glitter. I am certain we will find more uses for it).

And that is it!  Here it is again:

It took just about an hour to do and looks super cute on top of my tree.  Plus, I love that it was a craft that Little and I worked on together.  What's on top of your tree? Are you are star or an angel person?

See you swoon,

If you liked it then you should've put a wreath on it

Oh yes I did.

Happy December!  Are you in the throes of holiday decorating?  I am and it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here.  Up today is a small, fun thing I did in my living room:  added a wreath to my large print over the fireplace.  You know, the one that looks like this that I just posted about last Tuesday:

I ordered the Glitterball Wreath from Crate & Barrel on Black Friday, which had free shipping and 15% off everything.  Unbelievably, the wreath was delivered to my house that Sunday!  Um, thank you Crate & Barrel!

Anyway, back to the wreath.  If you had time, it looks like you could easily DIY this with a styrofoam hoop and a bunch of little styrofoam craft balls, some paint and glitter.  See?

But I wanted easy, and easy this was.  I grabbed a thick ribbon from my stash, looped it around the wreath, and then hung the ribbon on a tiny On Command hook behind the frame ... and voila!

What do you think?  And how's your place shaping up for the holidays?

See you swoon,

Secret Santa! Something to Wear, Read, Want & Need

Don't you just love secret santas (aka, pollyannas, yankee swaps, etc.)?  I do!  I have a great online group of friends (we've been together since 2001).  There are about 35 of us, and every year we try to do a secret santa in December.  This year there was a $25 limit and I drew my friend Jen.  I was so excited!  I like to make my gifts as thoughtful as possible ... so I thought and thought and the answer was right in front of me: I'd do exactly what Jen was planning to do for her daughter for Christmas and give her four gifts: something to wear, something to read, something that she wants and something that she needs.  Yeah!  Here are all the gifts packaged up ... brown paper packages tied up with string.

I printed up the tags on my Mac using some favorite fonts (Lane Narrow and Affair).  I had the brown paper bag from a grocery trip and the ribbon were remnants in my stash.  I decided to print out little tags to include inside each gift, too.  And now for what's inside (along with a running tab of the cost)!

* Something to Wear *

I went with some super soft, super cozy, cream socks from Old Navy.  That way I didn't have to worry about sizes and who doesn't love fluffy soft socks, especially as Winter is upon us?  These cost just $2 at an Old Navy Black Friday sale.

 * Something to Read *

I wanted to get Jen something useful.  I went with the the little book, Salt, Lemons, Vinegar and Baking Soda.  I recognized it immediately, as Jamie blogged about this book awhile ago.  It is so cute and helpful, especially to Jen who loves to keep things eco-friendly around her home.  I need to pick up one of these books for myself!  This book was on sale for about $5 at Barnes & Noble.

 * Something She Wants *

This was easy!  Jen loves to knit so I emailed one of my other knitter-friends and asked for a suggestion on a place to get a gift card.  She suggested Purl Soho ... so I ordered a giftcard for $20 that Jen can use in the store or online.  I gotta admit: I don't knit but I really want to poke around that site.  Such cute stuff!

* Something She Needs *

Well, this one was probably the hardest of all.  I cheated a little and did a fun little poll on the boards and asked, among many other questions, "what is something you really need this holiday?"  Jen responded that she could use a holiday music CD, since they don't have one.  She thought it would be fun to play it while decorating their tree.  Yes!  I have a ton of Christmas CDs, so I just loaded them on my Mac, created a playlist in iTunes and burned her a custom CD with 90 minutes of Christmas music.  Cost? Free.  I had the CDs (even the blank one) on hand.  The cover is something I downloaded from Better Homes and Gardens - a cute Christmas pillow download (you can see more info on it in my post last week).  I just reduced the size of it to fit in a CD case.

And there you have it!  For $27 (I went $2 over budget - no biggie), I got my friend Jen four cute things. I hope she finds them as fun as I had putting it all together.

What about you? Participating in any gift exchanges this year?  Christmas is coming!

See you swoon,
