5 More Things About Me

Happy Wednesday!  Wednesdays are usually house project day here on Swoon, but I've been working on the weekends, so there is no post today.  I thought it might be fun to share some things about me.  Even though I am, for better or for worse, pretty much myself here on the blog, I figure there are always little hidden nuggets that you might not know about me.  I've done this before in this post and this post (so that's an additional 15 things).  Here are 5 more things you always wanted to know about me and more.

1. I played the piano for over 10 years.

I did.  I started taking lessons when I was in second grade, and age 7, and stopped lessons at around age 16 but continued to play often until I left for college.  I played the usuals - Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, but my piano teachers also allowed me to choose my choice and pick my own music.  And you know that was good stuff.  "Open Arms" by Journey, "Just You and I" by Eddie Rabbit and Crystal Gayle, "Glory of Love" by Peter Cetera ... yeah.  But ironically enough, my favorite song to play, and the most difficult piece of music I ever mastered, was "Send in the Clowns"  from A Little Night Music.  I wish I could remember how to play it.  Even if there is some relation to clowns.

2. I am afraid of dogs.  But I love baby animals.

And I blame Da-Bee-Blah-Daaooog and Barkley.  Let me explain.

Da-Bee-Blah-Daaooog was, well, a big black dog that lived in my neighborhood when I was a kid.  I don't think he was bad, but he was big and he terrified the 2 year old me (hence "Da-Bee-Blah-Daaooog" instead of "big black dog").  If I ever saw him, I would freeze and scream Da-Bee-Blah-Daaooog Da-Bee-Blah-Daaooog Da-Bee-Blah-Daaooog!!!!!

And Barkley was this mean mean mean golden retriever (honestly, did you even know that Goldens could be mean? because it seems to go against their nature) who lived up the street from me growing up.  He was so mean and so bad.  One day, Barkley came down to my house and attacked my dog Pepper (a grey Miniature Schnauzer) and my uncle's dog Pepper (a black cockapoo) at the same time.  I watched Barkely attack the respective Peppers and it was traumatizing.   From that moment on, my fear began.

But I really love baby animals.  Like ... I love them more than a thirty-[redacted] year old woman should.  If I am on a run and see a baby rabbit or a kitten or a baby deer, I will totally geek out and scream.  I mean look at this.  Do you know how many times I bit my cheeks and tried to attack my computer screen when I found this picture?  It is a baby deer and a baby kitten.

silent screams a baby deer and a baby kitten!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!

3. I bought a Fendi bag once.

A real Fendi bag.  This was in 2002.  I was in the mall and in Bloomingdales and was walking around the beautiful designer purses when I stopped in my tracks at the sight of an amazingly gorgeous, deep claret leather Fendi purse.  It was so beautiful.  It was so me.  It was so expensive.  But it was on sale.  Even with the sale, it was a lot more than I ever wanted to spend on a purse.  I had the sales lady take it out of the case and I petted it for a bit and talked myself out of the purse.  I left the mall.  As I got half way home, it was as though an unstoppable rebel force intervened and turned my car around.  I literally did a U-turn in the road and went back to the mall and bought that bag.  I have never once, not for a second, regretted it.

4. I love Cheez-Its.  I do.

I probably should be a little ashamed to admit this, but I am not.  I really love Cheez-Its.  They are amazing and delicious and you can always find at least one (but probably more than one) box of Cheez-Its in my house.  I think I've tried every flavor (and there are a lot).  My favorites are Mozzerella, White Cheddar, Pepper Jack and I like the new grooves ranch flavor.  Behold - Cheeze-It heaven:

5.  I love the King of Rock n' Roll: Elvis Presley.

I really love Elvis.  I do I do I do.  I think it was the early influences of my friend Heather's mom, but I have loved Elvis for as long as I can remember ... especially old Elvis.  Vegas Elvis.  Suspicious Minds Elvis.  If you happen to find me at a karaoke bar, there is a very good change that I will sing Suspicious Minds at least once.  It's a mainstay on my running playlists.  One of my favorite things about Sunday mornings is the "Elvis and Friends" show on the local oldies station.  Oh Elvis ... we're caught in a trap ... I can't walk out ... because I love you too much baby."

And there you go.  5 more things.  Consider your otherwise mundane Wednesday made.  You're welcome.

See you swoon,

Training Recap: 11/3/14-11/9/14

Hello! Happy Monday.  Happy crazy November holy moly cow I'm supposed to have two trials in the next few weeks and a bunch of competing deadlines and Christmas is coming and so is Thanksgiving and my high school reunion.   Happy ... ZOMG.  Here's how I feel about it all.

Despite my busy work schedule, I'm still getting my runs in.  The Philly marathon is just two weeks (!!) from yesterday.  Heather is ready.  Next Sunday is a taper run and then it's go time.  Excitement!

Here's a recap of what I did last week:

11/3/14-11/9/14:  4:55:24 hours

Swam: 22:27 minutes (1,000 yards)
Ran:  4:33 hours (26.5 miles)

Monday:  easy 3 mile run
Tuesday:  easy 3 mile run
Wednesday:  speedwork at track
Thursday:  rest day
Friday: rest day (unintended)
Saturday: swim
Sunday: 16 mile long run with Heather

Ahhh ... maintenance mode.  I'm enjoying these few weeks where I just run and do what I want.  Once November is over, I'll start up with my coach again.  But for now, this works for me.  What also works for me? Running in Autumn.  It is *the best* time of year to run.  Here are a couple of pix that a friend snapped of me on a relatively recent run.  The leaves ... the crisp air ... runner's perfection.

Anyway - onto last week.

Monday and Tuesday were easy 3 milers, but Tuesday's run was a good 2 minutes faster than Monday's.  Because I knew that I'm not accountable to my coach (who would not be happy with the following), I decided to mix up the daily routine of a training run and make my 3 mile run an imaginary race. While the kids were at CCD, I went to a local park with a 1 mile loop.  I decided to pass everyone I encountered and not be passed by anyone.  I accomplished these things and was the winner of the race!

Winners look like this:

And here is my watch.  Clearly 7:54/mile is not my normal endurance pace.

Wednesday was speedwork at the track.  I did a pretty easy workout with 10 minutes endurance + 3 x 7:30/7:45 for 1/2 mile with endurance 1/2 mile + 5 minutes endurance.

Thursday was a scheduled rest day (and a horrible, cold, raw, rainy day, so yay) and Friday was supposed to be a run but I made it into a rest day because I had too much going on.

Saturday was a fun, easy 1,000 yard swim.  Not much to say about this.

Sunday, I met Heather at the trail and we banged out a 16 mile run.  That's her (and my) last long run before the race!  She's ready.  And so am I.  I am super excited for race day.  I've decided to leave the music at home and soak in the sounds around me.

See you swoon,

What I Wore {post 56}

Happy Friday!

A word about my "what I wore" photos - I know the quality is terrible.  I have been using an iPhone 4, circa July 2011, and the camera (and the phone) pretty much gave up.  I have a shiny and new iPhone 6 and the photo quality is amazing.  But first, I have to use up these old ones.  So, the pictures will get better from here on out.  I promise.

* Black Dress & Black/White Print Cardigan *

Dresses are my go-to when I need an outfit fast.  I've had this dress, a simple matte jersey sheath, from Ann Taylor going on 14 years now.  It has a bateau neckline and is perfect in the Summer on its own or in the Spring and Fall with a cardigan.  I wore my printed cardigan (super old from Talbots), red pumps and my funky red and gold necklace with the dress.

* Grey Suit & Lace Shell *

I had a court appearance this day.  One thing I love about court day is I don't have to give much thought at all to what I'm wearing - it's a suit.  I just have to decide which suit and which shirt underneath.  This is a suit from The Limited and the shell is from j.crew a few years ago.  The cab ride selfie was in response to selfies that Amy and Bill took on their mini get-away to the Bahamas.  They sent me selfies from the resort.  I wanted to make them super jealous by letting them know where I was.

* Tunic Dress, Boots & Tights *

I am so sorry about these pictures.  They are so blurry!  Anyway, I got this dress from Nordstrom.  I tried it a few weeks ago, but with a bare leg, and it wasn't quite right for work.  It got cooler, so I tried it again with tights and that was a winning, office-appropriate look.  I like this dress a lot.

Have a great weekend!  On tap for me is soccer and then heading home to my parents' house with the kids for the weekend.  On Sunday I'll run in my hometown, which is one of my favorite places to run, with my friend Heather, who is one of my favorite people in the world.  It's her penultimate long run for the Philly marathon.  See you back here on Monday.

See you swoon,

Finally! Revamped and Organized Jewelry Box

Ahhhh.  I can't wait to share this project with you! It's been something I've wanted to do for years and I finally did it.  I revamped and organized my beautiful jewelry box.  What took so long was my indecision about what to do with the wood finish.  Here it is before:

Now, if you've read this blog for more than a hot minute, you know that I like white furniture.  Nothing is safe: if I have a piece of brown wood, I am painting it white ... or maybe a soft seaglass green.  So, my instinct has always been to paint the jewelry box white, too.  The only issue is it was a gift from my grandparents for my college graduation and is a really good, well-crafted, high quality piece from a family-owned furniture company in farm country Pennsylvania.  And while I know that the finish of the wood doesn't really matter, something in me just didn't like the idea of slapping white paint over that gorgeous wood.

I bought some liming wax, which I've seen on a bunch of blogs I like.  The process seemed simple enough: use a wire brush on the finish and then add the wax, which would supposedly give a soft whitewash to the wood.  I gave it a try and ... fail.  The dark stain was still showing through and it just looked like it had some cloudy film on it.  I considered getting out wood stripper and taking off the finish, but given how intricate and small this piece is, it seemed like a ton of work, for an effect I wasn't even sure I wanted.  So I went back to my comfort zone.  White paint! Who is surprised?!?

I used a coat of oil based primer and three coats of Valspar's Cream Delight (which I used on the trim on my living room bookshelves).

Just like with any other piece of furniture that I refinish, after the final coat was dry, I added Polycrilic to protect the finish.  I let that sit for 24 hours before returning it to my room. I added new hardware that I found on Etsy at DaRosa Creations.   I love the way they look.

And just like that, the outside was done!  It went from this ...

to this!

Much better.

And that's not all!  The inside of the jewelry box was a mess.  I generally knew where all my jewelry was, but it was all sort of haphazardly thrown into the different drawers.  I took some time to neaten up the mess.

The first thing I did was go through the drawers and make sure I really wanted everything in there.  Look at all of this:

I decided to add some drawer liners as well.  I had a massive amount of blue velvet in my fabric stash, and this seemed like a great way to put it to use.  I wrapped the velvet around pieces of foam board that I picked up from Target, which I cut to fit the size of the drawers.  The drawers went from jumbled messes to this!

Yay!  I'm thrilled with this project and so so happy that it's finally done.  Now I'm inspired and ready to do paint more furniture - the playroom pieces (which have been on the to do list since January) and the dining room table top.  The legs will go white, but the top is going to get stripped of its cherry wood finish and then limed.  There's always a project waiting in the wings.

See you swoon,

Training Recap: Oct. 13-Nov. 2

Hello!  Sorry for my radio silence last week.  Life got a little crazy (which is to say work got a lot crazy), so I didn't have time to finish and publish my blogs.  It's all good - though my November is going to fly by at warp speed.

Anyway.  After my BQ at the Steamtown Marathon, I had a bit of a break in my training.  I am keeping busy with runs because I'm running with my friend Heather at the Philly Marathon in a couple of weeks (it's her first marathon! yeah!!).  So I knew after Steamtown I could take a little breather, but I needed to keep on keeping on with the long runs.  I'll recap my training below.  My training is maintenance mode right now, and I'm not working with my coach until after the Philly Marathon.  I know I can maintain my fitness on my own in the meantime.  Also, you know you're a runner when your son makes up his own playing card game (ala Pokemon) and the one card is this:

I'm not sure what any of the lingo is, but I do like that my shirt says (heart run run).  melt.

Anyway ... as for goals (because you know I need a goal and a plan), I have a turkey trot 5K (same one I did last year) and no other races scheduled for 2014!  I'm still working out the kinks in my 2015 race plan and will need to go over that with my coach, but I'm thinking 2015 will be running focused - a half marathon in Austin in February (I'm currently signed up for the full, but I'm second guessing that decision), perhaps the Pittsburgh full in May and a bunch of sprint tris over the Spring and Summer.  Yay.

Onto the training:

Week of October 13-October 19:  2:38:10 hours

Swam: 39:26 minutes (1,700 yards)
Ran:  1:59 hours (14.03 miles)

Monday:  Rest Day
Tuesday: Rest Day
Wednesday: Track Run - 3 miles
Thursday: Easy Swim - 1,700 yards
Friday: Easy Run - 3 miles
Saturday: Rest Day
Sunday: "Long run" - 8 miles

My recovery from Steamtown was no.joke.  Wow.  My quads were killing me.  I rested two full days and was finally ready for a run on Wednesday.  I did that run on the track with my new running club friend.  It was great.

Thursday I did some active recovery, which was to swim a mile in the pool.  I've missed swimming and added a day of it back to my rotation.  Love it.

Friday's 3 miler was nothing special - just an easy 3 miles.  And Sunday's "long run" was just 8 miles in my hometown on a simply stunning Fall day.  I didn't want to push to a really long long run, but I knew I needed to bank some miles.  8 miles seemed like a good choice.  It was.

Week of October 20-October 26:  3:45:26 hours

Swam: 21:15 minutes (1,000 yards)
Ran: 3:24 hours (23.7 miles)

Monday:  Easy recovery run: 3 miles
Tuesday:  Speedwork at Track - 3.72 miles
Wednesday: Rest Day
Thursday: Easy run - 2 miles
Friday: Rest Day
Saturday:  Swim - 1,000 yards
Sunday: Long run:  15 miles

More of the same this week.  Mostly runs, one swim, two rest days, and I added back a real long run of 15 miles and speedwork. The long run was a little harder than I thought it would (or should) be.  But I got it done.  I averaged 8:47 pace on that run, which made me happy.

Oh and look what's back now that it's dark in the morning ... safety patrol singlet!

don't run me over. tx.
Week of October 27-November 2:  6:24.58 hours

Swam: 21:00 minutes (1,000 yards)
Ran: 6:03:59 hours hours (35.3 miles)

Monday:  Easy run - 3 miles
Tuesday: Rest Day
Wednesday: Speedwork at track with running club
Thursday:  Run - 4 miles
Friday:  Run - 4 miles
Saturday:  Swim - 1,000 yards
Sunday: Long run - 20 miles with Heather

Now this is more like it.  One rest day, speedwork, lots more miles.  I also joined my running club at the track for a group speedwork workout (that I managed to screw up somehow ... but still got it done. I screwed it up b/c my coach talked meters, and I talk miles and I got confused.).  The highlight of this week was my long run with Heather.  I'm so proud of her!  We banged out 20 miles on the trail and this will be her longest run in preparation for the Philly Marathon.  It's a gradual taper for her til race day.  She ran it so strong and in tricky, windy conditions.  There is no doubt she could have kept on going after the 20 mile mark.  I cannot wait to be there with her as she crosses that finish line and runs every mile leading up to it!

friends since first grade
Yeah! Have a great week!  This week is more of the same - easy short runs, maybe a swim, speedwork and another long run with Heather.  Yippie.

See you swoon,
